Harris was appointed by Biden to lead the White House initiative to solve the migrant crisis at the southern border and work with Central American countries to address the root causes of the issue on March 24, but she has yet to visit the border or hold a press conference in the two weeks since.

Biden made the announcement while meeting with Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandra Mayorkas, and other immigration advisors at the White House to address the recent surge of migrants arriving at the border, including thousands of unaccompanied minors.

“When she speaks, she speaks for me,” Biden said that her experience as California’s attorney general qualifies her to lead the administration’s response.

However, Vice President Kamala Harris faces criticism for not visiting the overwhelmed southern border. Still, she managed to visit a bakery in Chicago on Tuesday and left with a slice of her favorite German chocolate cake.

Harris was in Chicago, where she toured a new vaccination center for union employees. She also met with the owners and employees of Brown Sugar Bakery on the city’s South Side.

According to WLS-TV, Harris visited the bakery with Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton and Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx after it appeared on a list of small businesses she wanted to visit.

“She could have gone to a million other places, but she came here, and I’m grateful for that,” one worker told ABC7.

Harris also came under fire after responding with a laugh when a reporter asked on Monday, March 22, if she planned to visit the southern border.

Politicians have called on Harris to visit the border. Earlier this week, Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich wrote to Harris, urging her to do so and inviting her on a trip to the area with him.

The Biden administration has been facing a escalating border crisis, with a unprecedented migrant surge that has led to images of unaccompanied children packed at over-capacity facilities and individuals tested positive for coronavirus being released into the U.S. However, it has refused to call it a crisis and blamed the Trump administration.

According to US Customs and Border Protection, over 172,000 people attempted to reach the United States via the Southwest border in March, a 71 percent rise over February’s figures. According to CBP data, there was over 53,000 family unit illegal aliens. In March, US border officials encountered 18,890 unaccompanied children, surpassing the previous highs of 11,475 in May 2019 and 10,620 in June 2014.
