A mother in Volusia County, Florida, is facing child abuse charges after punching her 10-year-old son so hard that his jaw was dislocated, WFLA reported.
Ann Perugia, 35, is being held without bond at the Volusia County Jail for infliction of mental and physical injury to her son at her home on Wednesday evening, Oct. 23.
Perugia had asked her son to turn off his “Fortnite” video game and take a shower. After 10 minutes passed, Perugia asked him if he had taken a shower and he replied “no,” in a stern voice. Perugia instructed him to get in the shower, police said.
That’s where their stories split.
The boy claimed he got up and started toward the bathroom and that is when his mother got irate and charged into the bathroom. While they were in the bathroom, his mother punched him with a closed fist in the jaw which dislocated his jaw and caused great pain.
Perugia claimed that after she asked him a second time to take a shower, he stomped his feet into the bathroom, so she followed him and asked what his attitude was.
But he yelled, “I hate you and you don’t do anything for me!” The next thing she remembered seeing was the boy packing a bag and calling his dad, police said.
Perugia said he tried to leave, so she grabbed him by the arm and brought him back inside the house. She said he walked outside again and threw rocks at her car. She did not mention punching her son.
His father found him outside with a bag of clothes and some shoes. The father told police Perugia instructed him to take his child and leave.
The father, who does not have full custody, completed a sworn statement and said he wanted to press charges against Perugia for child abuse, Fox 32 reported.
