The remains of a man and woman uncovered on a beach in Texas have been identified as a missing Rumney, New Hampshire couple, investigators said.
James Lawrence Butler III, a 48-year-old U.S. Navy veteran, and his 46-year-old wife Michelle Elaine Butler were reported missing on Oct. 23 after family and friends lost contact with them, MEAWW reported.
Investigators found their remains buried in the sand Sunday, Nov. 3, on Padre Beach in Corpus Christi, Texas, where the couple had gone camping.
The woman’s body was found in a shallow grave, and her husband’s body was later discovered buried under hers.
The couple had gone camping on Oct. 15 and had not contacted anyone since Oct. 16. Butler’s sister told KZTV that the couple had been traveling around the country since June 2018 taking part-time jobs.
They had set up camp with their truck and RV trailer, which are still missing, according to the sheriff’s office.
The Nueces County medical examiner’s office ruled the couple’s deaths as homicides but did not release information about the cause of death, CNN reported.
