The body of 2-year-old Nalani Johnson who disappeared on Saturday afternoon, Aug. 31, was found in western Pennsylvania, according to investigators.
Authorities found Johnson’s body on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at Pine Ridge Park in Burrell Township, Indiana County, three days after an Amber Alert was issued following the toddler’s abduction from Penn Hills, Indiana County District Attorney Patrick Dougherty confirmed in a press conference.
A large presence of state troopers and FBI agents converged on the scene during the search for Nalani on Tuesday afternoon.
The location of Tuesday’s search was about 37 miles east of Penn Hills, where authorities allege the girl was kidnapped.
An autopsy will be performed Wednesday to determine the cause and manner of Nalani’s death.
Sharena Nancy, 25, who authorities said had been romantically involved with the child’s father, is being held in the Allegheny County Jail on kidnapping and other felony charges in the alleged abduction of Nalani. Authorities have not said whether the woman is also a suspect in the child’s death.
Dougherty made reference to a woman who is “currently in custody” in Allegheny County. He did not use her name but said, “We believe that she is involved. To what extent, that is still being determined.”
Allegheny County police said they believe Nancy traveled near the Chestnut Ridge resort after driving away from Penn Hills with Nalani on Saturday. They are asking anyone who has surveillance video from the Route 22 corridor that was recorded between 5:23 p.m. and 7:25 p.m. Saturday to contact them at 1-833-255-8477.
Investigators would also like to hear from anyone who knows Nancy, or anyone who has any information about the alleged abduction.
