A California father and 2-year-old boy at the center of a statewide Amber Alert have been found dead in Tuolumne County, according to family members.

According to the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office, the bodies of John Weir, 2, and his father Steven Weir, 32, were found near the car that authorities said they were searching for in the Amber Alert.

The red Hyundai sedan was located Sunday night, Sept. 22, in a remote area on Clark Fork Road near Sand Flat Campground.

The Merced County Sheriff’s Office said that John was abducted by his father over the weekend, triggering the statewide alert. Steven was considered armed and dangerous.

On Saturday, Sept. 21, Steven was supposed to meet with the boy’s mother, Sarah. However, he failed to appear at their child custody exchange location.

The Amber Alert has been canceled. The investigation is ongoing, the sheriff’s officials stated.
