A missing autistic boy in Murray County was found safe on Thursday night, Oct. 31, hours after going missing from his home.

According to Murray County Sheriff Gary Langford, 12-year-old Matthew Hopkins was found in a creek, WRCB reported.

Matthew, who is autistic and nonverbal, was reported missing around 6:00 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, from his home in Chatsworth, Georgia. He was last seen playing in the yard.

Around 250 community members joined in to search for him, Langford said.

“This is just a community in Murray County that loves our kids, and they came out,” said Langford. “They were all out searching the sides of the roads, they were searching the woods, they were giving their time.”

The boy was taken to a hospital to be checked out.
