A cat that lived on the ninth floor of Champlain Towers South condo miraculously survived the collapse and finally reunited with its family.

Binx, the black feline that lived with its family in unit 904 of the Champlain Towers South went missing the night of the disastrous event on June 24, according to Miami Herald

On Thursday, July 8, two weeks after the destruction, a volunteer who went to feed cats in the area noticed Binx wandering near the rubble of the condo site.

Binx was taken into an animal rescue center in Miami Beach. The pet reunited with its family the next day, thanks to the help of Kitty Campus, Operation PAW, and SoBe cats.

“I’m glad that this small miracle could bring some light into the life of a hurting family today and provide a bright spot for our whole community in the midst of this terrible tragedy,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava in a news conference late Friday, July 9.

The mayor also shared Binx’s discovery on Twitter.

“After 16 long and incredibly difficult days, I’m able to share a small piece of good news—Binx from Champlain Towers South has been found,” she wrote. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart and on behalf of our community to the team who played a role in reuniting him with his family.”

Angela Gonzalez and her daughter Deven were hospitalized due to the injuries sustained from the collapse. Tayler Gonzalez, Deven’s older sister was not home at the time. Edgar Gonzalez, the children’s father has not been found, the outlet shared.

“That’s actually Deven’s cat, so I’m sure she’s going to be over the moon knowing that they found her cat,” said Maria Gaspari, a friend of the family. “I just can’t believe it. I just couldn’t believe it when we received the confirmation. This is a miracle for the whole Surfside community,” reports the NYPost.

Binx’s return has provided a ray of optimism among the melancholy of the increasing death toll, which on Thursday climbed to 79.

“It’s a little sunshine for the family,” said Gaspari. “It’s good news in the middle of all this craziness and all this sadness. It brings hope, and we need that.”

It is not clear how Binx the cat managed to survive the catastrophe.
