The President Donald Trump said Friday, July 5, “Mexico is doing a far better job than the Democrats,” referring to the work the country is doing at the border to control migrants heading to the United States, according to the VOA.

During a press conference at the White House, President Trump assured that Mexico is properly guarding the southern border.

“The southern border is being guarded very well by Mexico. Mexico is doing a lot more than the Democrats, we all know, because of the tariffs, but they’ve been excellent,” Trump said.

Between 100 and 200 arrests have been made over the past two weeks, with last month’s average being between 400 and 500, President Trump said.

“They put thousands of people on the southern border. (…) Now there are between 16,000 and 21,000 troops, this had a great effect,” the president added, noting that there are more troops on the border controlling the situation and that it is expected to be even more.

He also pointed out that although the troops have only been there for a week, the measure has had a “tremendous effect.”

In recent days, during an interview with Telemundo, President Trump said he did not want tariffs for Mexico, and that his counterpart Andrés Manuel López Obrador likes him and would like to meet with him.

President Trump also referred to the detention of migrants—an operation to legally expel people who have entered the United States illegally.

“We are taking them back to their country,” he said.

President Trump’s comparison between the Democrats and Mexico, in reference to the work done on the border, is due to certain loopholes that exist in the immigration law that the president has long been asking to be filled but the Democrats have blocked.

In addition, the president advocates strengthening security at the southern border, since immigration officials are few compared to the number of migrants who arrive and often officers have to care for children and women injured as a result of human trafficking.
