Bill and Melinda Gates met with convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein in New York City in Sept. 2013. According to a report by the Daily Beast., the meeting was so uncomfortable that she warned her husband not to do business with him again.
The sources close to the couple said Mrs. Gates was “furious” at her husband for meeting with Epstein and remains “haunted” by the experience.
Friends of the couple told the Daily Beast that Melinda is still plagued by her experience with Epstein, who had been accused of molesting underage girls for years and allegedly killed himself in 2019 while being held on sex trafficking charges in Manhattan.
However, it is unclear if Melinda was shocked by Epstein’s previous prosecution or simply disliked his personality.
The New York Times reported that Mr. Gates attended a social gathering at Epstein’s Manhattan mansion in 2011. According to the newspaper, the pair had met several times between 2011 and 201r, including during a flight on Epstein’s private plane, called the “Lolita Express,” from New Jersey to Palm Beach, Florida in 2013.
A Gates spokeswoman said that he was unaware that Epstein owned the plane.
The New York Times also revealed that Mr. Gates wrote an email to colleagues in 2011 about Epstein, saying that, “His lifestyle is very different and kind of intriguing although it would not work for me.”
Gates’ spokesman, Bridgitt Arnold, told the newspaper that he was “referring only to the unique décor of the Epstein residence—and Epstein’s habit of spontaneously bringing acquaintances in to meet Mr. Gates.”
“It was in no way meant to convey a sense of interest or approval,” she stated.
According to the Daily Beast, Gates said in Sept. 2019 that, “I met him. I didn’t have any business relationship or friendship with him.”
“I didn’t go to New Mexico or Florida or Palm Beach or any of that. There were people around him who were saying, ‘Hey, if you want to raise money for global health and get more philanthropy, he knows a lot of rich people,’” she stated.
“Every meeting where I was with him were meetings with men. I was never at any parties or anything like that. He never donated any money to anything that I know about,” Melinda Gates said.
Epstein was indicted on federal sex trafficking charges in 2019 and died in a Manhattan prison cell while awaiting trial. The death was deemed a suicide by the medical examiner.
Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s ex-girlfriend, was convicted on sex trafficking charges in 2020. Prosecutors claimed she arranged for Epstein to harass underage girls sexually. Maxwell, who is being held in Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center, denied any wrongdoings.
Her trial was postponed this week from July to early fall, but no new date has been set.
