A Massachusetts teacher has opened her sweet home to one of her students after his mom recently died of cancer.

Kerry Bremer from Ayer met Jake Manning, who has Down syndrome, and his single mom, Jean, more than four years ago. Bremer said that she fell in love with Jake instantly.

Bremer knew Jake’s mother was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer.

After talking with her husband, Bremer made Jake’s family an offer.

“If you need a backup plan for Jake, then our family is happy to make him part of our family,” Bremer told WCVB. “She said, ‘I’ll sleep better tonight than I have in a long time.'”

Jake spent the next few years getting to know the Bremers, sharing weekends and holidays with them.

Bremer’s children, Kaitlyn, Kristen, and Jonathan, quickly embraced Jake’s loving and joyful nature, along with her husband, Dave.

On Wednesday, Nov. 13, Jake’s mom suddenly died. Jean took a nap after a chemotherapy treatment and never woke up.

“We shared our boy and she will live on here in this house,” said Bremer.

“My mom went to heaven. She’s always in my heart,” said Jake.

The Bremers are now Jake’s guardians and the young boy is thankful that his second family was there for him when he needed them most.
