A woman is in critical condition after being shot by her stepfather outside of a hospital in west suburban Elmhurst on Wednesday night, Oct. 2, hospital officials said.

The stepfather and his stepdaughter were sitting in a vehicle outside of the emergency room at Elmhurst Hospital at about 7 p.m. when he allegedly shot her in the face, a hospital representative said.

The stepfather then fatally shot himself inside of his vehicle.

The stepdaughter was able to get herself into the emergency room for treatment, where she is in critical condition, hospital officials said.

Elmhurst police said they were called to the hospital for a report of a man with a gun after a woman ran into the emergency room following the shooting. They said they found the man in his vehicle with a gunshot wound. He was taken back into the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said they do not know the exact ages of the shooter and victim, but the stepfather is in his 70s and the stepdaughter is in her 40s.

The hospital was placed on lockdown for about 15 minutes, hospital officials said. Operations returned to normal after the situation was cleared.

The incident is still being investigated by the Elmhurst Police Department.
