A man died after being beaten as he slept on a bench in DeSoto County, Florida, early in December, WFTS reported.
Juan Sebastian suffered severe head trauma and spent weeks in the hospital.
Tammy Ramos who knew Juan for years said Juan was attacked as he slept on a bench behind a store on Highway 70 in Arcadia.
“There’s a wooded area in the back where they set up picnic tables for the gentlemen to eat and that’s where he was sleeping when it happened,” Ramos told the paper.
Ramos stayed by Juan’s side while he was in the hospital.
“I read the Bible to him. I talked to him and maybe he couldn’t hear me, but I was hoping he did,” Ramos said.
Friends called Juan “The Can Man.”
He would always push a shopping cart with cans and have his dog, Cheeto, by his side.
“He would push that cart miles down the road, every day. He doesn’t bother nobody, everybody respected him,” Montreal Peterson told WFTS.
Peterson held a car wash recently to raise money for Juan’s medical bills. Friends are focusing on finding Cheeto a permanent home.
“He’ll be adopted out to a forever home. We’re not going to just let him go with just anybody,” Ramos said.
Ramos said Juan’s dog is currently at the local shelter. She also hopes someone will be held accountable for the death of Juan.
“They need to be brought to justice. Somebody needs to come forward. Somebody knows something. It’s evil. Somebody needs to say something,” Ramos said.
Arcadia police have not released any details yet. The incident is still being investigated.
