A 12-year-old’s birthday party turned into a nightmare last week when gunfire erupted, injuring nine teenagers.

At about 8:40 p.m., gunfire erupted at a group of around 60 young people at a home in LaPlace. Investigators concluded that the gunfire resulted from verbal confrontations between two groups of young males. No fatalities were found in this incident said a statement from the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana.

“Those injured were a 17-year-old male shot in the arm; a 16-year-old male grazed in the ribs; a 15-year-old male with a graze wound to the ankle; a 15-year-old male shot in the foot; a 14-year-old male shot in the leg; a 13-year-old male shot in the leg; and a 12-year-old shot in both legs”, according to St John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office’s statement on Facebook.

Two victims remained in the hospital, a 16-year-old male shot in the stomach and a 14-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the head; both were in critical condition.

As many as 60 people were at the gathering, and “two groups of male juveniles with an ongoing feud met up at the house, began arguing and gunfire broke out,” police said, adding that two weapons had been used. There haven’t been any arrests yet.

Even though there were many witnesses at the gathering, no one has come forward with details, according to the police, who appealed to the public for assistance, The New York Post reported.

“Not one person has given a formal statement,” Sheriff Mike Tregre said in the department’s statement. “I am asking witnesses to come forward with information to help us learn more about what happened.”

The party was held in a garage, according to neighbor Rashad Bolden, who lives two doors away.

“Everybody I saw taken to the ambulance—they were all kids,” he told WUPL, adding that he believed the shooter was also a child. “For someone to just shoot into the garage full of kids, that’s kind of heartless. You want to call it heartless, but you know they are not old enough to know what heartless is.”
