Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.) said in an interview with Fox News on Tuesday, July 14, that the sanctions imposed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) on U.S. officials were a “manifestation of the bullying of Xi Jinping, the maximum dictator of China.”
Smith said during “America’s Newsroom” that the CCP was “worse now than ever” since Xi’s installation as leader, adding that he is the “dictator there for life.”
“He has consolidated power, he has secret police second to none and he has lied about Hong Kong. They gave their word that there would be human rights, it’s called the Basic Law, and that they would respect it at least until 2047. They broke that and dishonored themselves—that promise,” Smith said, referring to the security law imposed on the former British colony, which erodes its autonomy.
Smith also said he has worked throughout his career on human rights issues in China, asserting that Muslims in China were subject to genocide through forced abortion, sterilization, and concentration camps.
Sith recalled the persecution that the CCP has been waging for years against Catholics, Christians, and Tibetan Buddhists. Smith has also advocated for the the ancient Chinese discipline known as Falun Gong, which has also been brutally persecuted by CCP authorities, making its practitioners a focus of persecution from 1999 to the present.
Regarding sanctions, the legislators against whom the CCP took action are Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Ted Cruz (R-Texas), as well as Samuel Brownback, United States ambassador for international religious freedom.
One more sanction from the CCP, reported Reuters, was directed at the Congressional Executive Committee on China, which oversees human rights and reports annually to President Trump and Congress.
Such measures, which Smith called “outrageous,” were a response to the United States after it denied visas to three senior CCP officials for their links to human rights violations against Uighur minorities in China’s northern Xinjiang region.
As The Daily Caller noted, Smith made an earlier appearance on Fox News’s “The Ingraham Angle” where he accused the CCP of “crushing religious freedom” and the “pervasive use of torture.”
Smith is said to have pushed some bills through, which Americans could use to sue the Chinese Communist Party for its mishandling of the CCP Virus pandemic. For the same reason Smith had already received threats of sanctions from the Chinese Communist Party.
