The Drug Enforcement Administration is investigating after cocaine was found inside shipments of bananas at three Safeway stores in western Washington.

The King County Sheriff’s Office recovered 22 kilos of the cocaine at a Safeway store in Woodinville on Sunday, Aug. 18. The drugs were valued at roughly $550,000, King County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ryan Abbott said.

“That’s huge, we don’t see that very often,” said Abbott.

Twenty-three kilos of cocaine were found in banana boxes at a Safeway store in Bellingham on Sunday, Aug. 18, police said.

There was also a shipment sent to a Federal Way Safeway store.

“This appears to be a case where someone at a shipping port either got the wrong shipment from Central America or let cocaine slip through the U.S. port for fear of getting caught,” Bellingham police said.
