The Pike County Sheriff’s Office has opened an investigation after being sent some pictures posted on social media that allegedly show an infant buried under a pile of groceries in a shopping cart. The incident happened at the South Williamson Walmart at 10:30 pm on Wednesday, Sept. 11.

According to the photos, the infant appears to be under a large pile of grocery items, its feet sticking out from the car seat. A woman stands next to the shopping cart.

After working with the South Williamson Walmart store on security footage, deputies identified the woman. Cabinet for Health and Family Services workers went with the investigators to her home to do a welfare check on the infant and any other children in the home. They found that the child was not in any danger, according to WYMT-TV.

“The deputy was there, along with a social worker. Both felt confident that the child wasn’t in any danger at the home,” Chief Deputy Lynn Cross said.

Cross also said that the single mother of seven is trying to provide for her family and the department believes it was an isolated incident.

“A poor decision, I would say. She’s attempting to provide for those children, so I feel like that’s just a bad decision on her part,” Cross added.

The department will discuss its findings with a prosecutor for further guidance, according to Cross. Currently, no charges have been made.

The investigation is ongoing.
