Vice President Kamala Harris faces criticism for not visiting the overwhelmed southern border. Still, she managed to visit a bakery in Chicago on Tuesday and left with a slice of her favorite German chocolate cake.
Harris was in Chicago, where she toured a new vaccination center for union employees. She also met with the owners and employees of Brown Sugar Bakery on the city’s South Side, reports Fox News.
According to WLS-TV, Harris visited the bakery with Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton and Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx after it appeared on a list of small businesses she wanted to visit.
“She could have gone to a million other places, but she came here, and I’m grateful for that,” one worker told ABC7.
In a recent analysis from the Washington Post, the Biden administration spends at least $60 million per week to house the more than 16,000 migrant minors in federal facilities run by the Department of Health and Human Services. It warns that “those costs are expected to rise significantly over the coming months.”
According to US Customs and Border Protection, over 172,000 people attempted to reach the United States via the Southwest border in March, a 71 percent rise over February’s figures. According to CBP data, there was over 53,000 family unit illegal aliens. In March, US border officials encountered 18,890 unaccompanied children, surpassing the previous highs of 11,475 in May 2019 and 10,620 in June 2014.
CBP March numbers are officially out. The agency encountered a record number of unaccompanied children at the border (18,890).

Due to the unprecedented influx of unaccompanied minors during the border crisis, the Biden administration was forced to invest $86.9 million of American taxpayer’s money over six months to house migrant families in hotels across the nation.
President Joe Biden tapped Vice President Kamala Harris to lead the response to the immigration crisis on March 24, but she has yet to visit the border or hold a press conference in the two weeks since. Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) assured that she is “the worst possible choice” to handle the growing problem at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Ducey is governor of one of the states most affected by the growing immigration crisis. He strongly criticized Harris during a speech at the University of Arizona on Tuesday, March 23.
During his remarks, he said, “She’s about the worst possible choice that one could make.” He added, “In no point in her career has she given any indication that she considers the border a problem or a serious threat.”
Ducey increased his criticism of the president, saying, “If President Biden’s intent was to show that he’s taking this issue seriously, he’s really done the exact opposite here.”
Harris also came under fire after responding with a laugh when a reporter asked on Monday, March 22, if she planned to visit the southern border.

Rep. Burgess Owens (R-Utah) said this week that Harris and Biden should “get some backbone” and go to the border.
Meanwhile, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas visited two Texas border towns on Thursday April 8, where he spoke about resuming border wall construction and condemning sanctuary cities that refuse to comply with federal immigration authorities.
Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas, also responded with “priorities” to a tweet about Harris’ visit to the bakery.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Harris did not fly to California’s border region despite visiting her Los Angeles-area home last weekend, where she baked a “beautiful” pork roast with rice and peas.
