A Johnston firefighter died in a motorcycle accident on Tuesday, Aug. 27, after suffering fatal injuries.

The police department of Cranston recognized the victim as Richard Gemma, 45.

According to the department, during a crash at the junction of Belgium Avenue and Felicia Drive, Gemma experienced a traumatic head injury.

He was taken to a hospital in Rhode Island where he was declared dead.

Investigators believe Gemma was traveling north on Belgium Avenue when he struck the curb on the west side of the roadway causing him to veer. That’s when investigators think that Gemma used the brakes that led him to be thrown from of the motorcycle. Gemma didn’t wear a helmet, and the police said his head hit the ground.

The Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy.

The police say the inquiry is ongoing.
