After the U.S. enforced a 20-year zero-tolerance immigration policy that separated illegal immigrant children from their accompanying relatives, the Biden administration plans to pay $450,000 to each member of those families.

That payment would be a possible response to lawsuits filed on behalf of parents and children so segregated, who argue they suffer lasting psychological trauma as a result, according to The Wall Street Journal Oct. 28.

Each family could receive close to $1 million, considering that at least one minor and one parent are involved. The Departments of Justice, Homeland Security, and Health and Human Services are studying the case.

The total amount to be paid could exceed billions of dollars, considering that some 940 families have requested an average compensation of $3.4 million.

Also, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) estimates that some 5,500 illegal immigrants were separated in the last four years, although not all would necessarily come forward to claim the money.

Earlier reports claimed that the Biden administration would bring deported illegal aliens back to the United States, and in addition to amnesty to stay in the country would provide them with social services, according to Breitbart.

Some government lawyers have said the payments are excessive, considering that they would be given to people who have violated the law by crossing the border. Others noted that they exceeded those given to the families of Sept. 11, 2001, victims.

“It would be unthinkable to pay damages to a burglar who broke into your home for the ‘psychological trauma’ they endured during the crime,” Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) said in a statement.

He also questioned the Biden administration’s immigration policies, “The Biden administration’s promises of citizenship and entitlement programs have already caused the worst border crisis in history—a huge cash reward will make it even worse. This is the height of insanity.”

For his part, journalist Todd Starnes started a thread on his Twitter account writing, “Are we allowed to self identify as illegal to get the half million dollars from Biden?”

And his followers continued to express their thoughts on the matter, “Maybe, maybe not.  But, if this comes about (it won’t), every citizen in the country should apply for the funds, not falsifying anything, to bottleneck the system process,” said user @burneyjarvis.

The netizen with the account @Jamison_Maxey considers that what does not work is the process of legal admission to the country.

“I identify as an alien, then I pay no taxes & get free stuff.  To be clear, the problem is not people wanting to come to the USA, it is the poor management of processing who gets admitted. Disneyland does not allow people in without proper admittance. We shouldn’t either”, he said.
