According to officials with the Carilion Clinic, a Roanoke doctor and his tour guide were found murdered in Belize on Sunday, June 23.
The victims are identified as Gary Paul Swank, 53, an associate professor of internal medicine at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and an interventional cardiologist, medical director of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab at the Carilion Clinic, and Mario Graniel, 53, a tour guide from Belize.
The San Pedro Police said that upon arrival, they observed a light on in the black skiff with the registered name of JOHNNIE G. While Swank was found floating face down in a lagoon about 30 feet away from the skiff, apparently with multiple gunshot wounds, Graniel was also found dead with several gunshot wounds.
Director of corporate communications, Chris Turnbull told the Carilion Clinic that they are heartbroken by his loss because Swank was a well-respected and well-loved colleague who, each and every day, embodied the values that they hold dear and his absence left a void in their team.
According to the initial police investigation, a dark color skiff passed by and opened fire on the boat that Graniel and Swank were in when they went fly-fishing within the San Pedro Town lagoon about 10:00 am.
Their lifeless bodies were taken to the San Pedro Polyclinic, where they were pronounced dead. Authorities are still investigating the incident.
