Early on Friday morning, Oct. 25, according to police, an infant was found dead at a recycling facility in San Jose.

Officers responded around 3:30 a.m. to GreenWaste Recovery and found the baby on the conveyor belt inside the plant, police said.

A worker who was sorting through recyclables and trash initially discovered the baby.

“I can only imagine they’re going through a difficult time right now as well as all the first responders who responded to the scene,” Officer Gina Tepoorten said. “Very difficult when you have a young infant or a child. It’s hard for everybody who was a part of that.”

The office of the coroner will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Detectives are going to try to determine where the baby came from.

GreenWaste Recovery is available in San Jose, Los Altos Hills, Palo Alto, and Santa Clara County’s southern part.
