An Indiana State Police Trooper in Tippecanoe County was killed while on his way to a car accident, police said.

Trooper Peter Stephan, 27, was on his way to help another state trooper who had called for back-up at a crash, according to Indiana State Police. That initial accident happened near Americus Township around 10:25 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11.

Stephan was driving his 2018 Dodge Charger patrol car police said. When he came around a curve, the vehicle ended up going off the road, rolling at least once and hit a utility pole.

EMS personnel rushed to the crash, but Stephan was pronounced dead at the scene.

Stephan, who is the 44th Indiana State Police Trooper to die in the line of duty, worked in Lafayette with the Indiana State Police Department for four years.

He left behind a wife and 6-month-old daughter.
