The Republican governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, has been warning for months about the chaotic situation on the border with Mexico. But, given the lack of action by the federal government, he has decided to take matters into his own hands and do the job that the Biden administration should be doing, even if that means meddling in affairs that exceed the state’s authority.
During an interview with Newsmax, Abbott was decisive in stating that the Biden administration “is completely ignoring the crisis on the border, and because of that, as governor, I am having to step up and do the federal government’s job.”
He continued, “We are going to instill safety. We’re going to be doing things in Texas that no state has ever done before when it comes to cracking down on anybody coming across the border. We’re going to step up and secure the border even more than we already are.”
At the time Abbott spoke to Newsmax, he had, in fact, already begun his action plan. This week he issued a Declaration of Emergency along the southern border of Texas, precisely because of concerns about border crossings.
In the statement, Abbott asserts that “President Biden’s open border policies have paved the way for dangerous gangs and cartels, human traffickers and deadly drugs like fentanyl to reach our communities.”
The governor’s words are actually justified by the significant increase in complaints from rural citizens in the area who see their property damaged and vandalized daily. Yet, at the same time, the Biden Administration does nothing concrete to protect them.
By declaring a state of disaster in the border counties, Texas will have access to more resources and strategies to protect property owners and enforce all federal and state laws to combat criminal activity stemming from the border crisis.
As reported by the governor, local law enforcement will play an important role in the new arrangements. Abbott told Kelly that he has already deployed more than 1,000 Texas Department of Public Safety officers and National Guard troops.
Abbott added that U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas “seems to live in a different universe.”
“He says the border is secure,” Abbott lamented. “It would be outrageous, but it sounds bizarre and crazy, because they literally have no idea. And I can’t tell if they’re just trying to disinform the public or they really don’t know. But they have no idea [of] the magnitude of what’s going on at the border.”
It is worth noting that neither President Biden nor Vice President Harris, who is supposed to resolve the conflict, has visited the border to see firsthand what is happening there.
Abbott highlighted the growing problem of the drug fentanyl, which he said is coming across the border like never before. Thus becoming a problem concentrated on the border with Mexico but directly affecting the entire country.
“There is enough fentanyl on the border, seized by the Department of Public Safety, to kill every man, woman and child in the entire state of New York,” the governor said.
Former President Trump on Tuesday publicly touted his endorsement of Gov. Abbott for re-election, giving him an early and crucial stamp of approval as he faces a possibly competitive primary.
“Greg Abbott is a fighter and a Great Governor for the incredible people of Texas,” Trump said in a written statement, praising Abbott’s record on issues including border security and gun rights. “Governor Greg Abbott will continue to be a great leader for the Lone Star State, and has my Complete and Total Endorsement for re-election. He will never let you down!”
