Ron DeSantis, Florida’s Republican governor, said Friday, June 25, during a press conference that he demands a “definitive” and clear explanation of why a 12-story building can collapse at a moment’s notice. The catastrophe has so far left 4 dead and 159 people missing.

With the number of dead and missing rising Friday following the freak Surfside condominium collapse, Gov. Ron DeSantis now prioritized emergency care in an effort to find the missing alive amid the mountains of concrete and steel surrounding the site.

“The search and rescue is the primary,” DeSantis said of the ongoing efforts as reported by the Herald Tribune. “Any lives. They’re trying to save lives.”

However he also mentioned the big unknown that is emerging around the disaster, regarding “how can a building collapse like that?”

“We’ll have to figure out why did this happen,” the governor said during a Friday stop in Pensacola. “That isn’t necessarily apparent right now. But it will be identified and I think anybody affected by this directly wants that answer.”

“But we also need to know if this is a larger problem or something unique to the building,” the governor added, opening the door to rumors that the building’s destruction could be the result of some intentional action or terrorist attack.

Approximately half of the oceanfront residential apartment building in Surfside collapsed around 1:30 a.m. Thursday. At least 159 are still missing, and four people have been found dead.

Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett told reporters Thursday that the building was undergoing a series of roof work but that it could not have been the cause of the collapse because it was routine maintenance work. “It’s hard to imagine that that could have been the impetus for such a catastrophic collapse, and I’m sure it wasn’t.”

He also said, “There’s no reason for this building to go down like that unless someone literally pulls out the supports from underneath or they get washed out or there’s a sinkhole or something like that, because it just went down.”

“Buildings in America do not fall down like this,” Burkett told CBS Miami in a separate interview. “Something very wrong happened here, and we need to understand what happened.”

The causes of the collapse are completely uncertain, but if there is one thing that is clear, it is that it is extremely strange.

In this context of uncertainty, social networks and some media outlets claim that John McAfee, the billionaire businessman who was found dead in his cell under very strange circumstances, published a cryptic tweet earlier this month in which he allegedly claims that he was storing secret files in a Miami condominium.

According to unofficial information circulating, this condo could be just the one that mysteriously collapsed recently.

Screenshots shared online appear to show the message from McAfee’s Twitter account on June 8, 2021, at 10:03 am at the time saying, “If anything ever happens to me, please know that the 31TB of files I have are located on hard drives in my condo near 88th Street and Collins Avenue just north of Miami Beach.”

On Wednesday, the day before the Miami building collapse, 75-year-old McAfee was found dead, allegedly after committing suicide.
