House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has announced that formal impeachment proceedings will commence against President Trump.
Pelosi said at a 5 p.m. press conference on Sept. 24, “Today, I’m announcing the House of Representatives is moving forward with an official impeachment inquiry. I’m directing our six committees to proceed with their investigations under that umbrella. … The president must be held accountable.”

Pelosi had been resisting calls for the president’s impeachment for some time, but with two-thirds of caucus now supporting the move, she is ready to proceed. The numbers increased after allegations against President Trump that he had pressured the Ukrainian government to investigate Joe Biden and his son Hunter for corruption, during a phone call he had last July with Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky. The allegation is the president made military aid to Ukraine conditional during the call.

“For the past several months we have been investigating in our committees and litigating in the courts so the House can gather all the relevant facts and consider whether to exercise its full Article 1 power, including a constitutional power of the utmost gravity, approval of articles of impeachment,” Pelosi said. “Our republic endures because of the wisdom of our Constitution enshrined in three coequal branches that act as checks and balances,” Pelosi added. “The president must be held accountable. No one is above the law.”

The president tweeted at the same time Pelosi was making her announcement, “Witch Hunt garbage.”

“Such an important day at the United Nations, so much work and so much success, and the Democrats purposely had to ruin and demean it with more breaking news Witch Hunt garbage. So bad for our Country!” he wrote.

The president had recently told reporters, “If [Pelosi] does that, they all say that’s a positive for me in the election,” he said. “You could also say who needs it. It’s bad for the Country.”

Pelosi said they have “the facts” and they “can’t” let him “win” reelection.
