A hiker who got separated from her group at the former Boy Scout camp in the Santa Monica Mountains was found dead Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 6, officials said.

Ventura County Sheriff’s Sgt. Eric Buschow. said the agency received a call around 2:30 p.m. from someone in the hiker’s group who said the woman had been missing without water for about two hours.

Deputies arrived and ultimately found the woman, not breathing, at the Circle X Ranch that sits above Malibu near Boney Mountain. They attempted to revive her by performing CPR, but she was declared dead at the scene.

The woman was believed to be in her early 70s, Buschow said. Her cause of death is unknown.

On Tuesday afternoon, temperatures in the region reached 81 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
