About half of Americans tend to agree with President Donald Trump that the anti-fascist group antifa should be labeled as terrorists.
According to the latest Rasmussen Reports survey released Wednesday, June 4, 49% of U.S. voters think the antifa movement, which is thought to be behind much of the violence in several cities should be designated a terrorist organization.
Thirty percent disagreed with such kind of designation, while 22% are undecided.
Many states are struggling to contain the violence that erupted across America during protests after George Floyd, a black man, died when a white police officer in Minneapolis applied full body weight to his neck, ignoring his pleas.
The survey found that 40% of Americans believe the mob violence is primarily legitimate outrage over what happened, but 49% disagreed, saying it is mostly criminals taking advantage of the situation. Eleven percent are not sure.
Thirty-one percent of voters now think most police departments are too aggressive in dealing with violent protesters, while 28% believe they are not aggressive enough. Just 30% think the response is about right. Eleven percent again are undecided.
The survey, conducted on June 1-2, shows that 51% of black voters feel the mob violence in the latest protests is legitimate outrage, while 53% of whites see it as mostly criminal.
Blacks are twice as likely as whites to think that most police departments are too aggressive in dealing with violent protesters.
Republicans (72%) are far more supportive of designating the antifa movement a terrorist organization than Democrats (32%) and voters not affiliated with either major party (43%).
But then 69% of Republicans and 47% of unaffiliated voters view the mob violence as mostly criminals taking advantage of the situation, while 58% of Democrats consider the violence legitimate outrage for the most part.
Democrats (51%) are also much more likely than GOP voters (14%) and those unaffiliated (26%) to view the police response as too aggressive.
Reacting to the violence across the country as protests gathered momentum, erupting in violence and looting, President Trump on May 31 tweeted, “The United States of America will be designating ANTIFA as a Terrorist Organization.”
Antifa often resorts to radical or military-style tactics to get its message across and infiltrates protests and sparking violence.
