A Shannon police officer shot and killed a man who had opened fire on a woman inside a popular Lee County convenience store on Thursday morning, Sept. 19, according to The Associated Press.

Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson told local news media that the two shootings happened shortly before 6 a.m. on Thursday morning at Griggs Grocery and Deli in Shannon, Mississippi, when a woman entered Griggs Store screaming for help, the Daily Journal reported.

A man followed the woman into the store and fired several shots, killing her. An off-duty Shannon police officer was in the store at the time and fatally shot the man. Nobody else at the time of the shootings was injured, Johnson said.

The names of those killed were not immediately released, according to The Associated Press.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation as is usual for fatal shootings involving law enforcement officers will examine what happened.

“We’re letting MBI (Mississippi Bureau of Investigation) handle the case. It’s still early and we’re still getting information,” Shannon Police Chief Desiree Kershner told reporters at the scene, according to the Daily Journal.
