A 53-year-old day care worker was shot and killed Wednesday night, Nov. 6, as she was arriving at her home in the Altgeld Gardens neighborhood on Chicago’s Far South Side.
Chicago police said Kimberly Underwood was just coming home from work when she was shot in the face about 10:30 p.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to WGN TV.
The 53-year-old woman was pulling into a parking space when shots rang out. She was caught in crossfire, police said.
Kimberly left a special needs son, 34, two daughters, and 11 grandchildren. Relatives said her life was devoted to caring for children.
Her extended family gathered at a home in Calumet City, where they were grieving together.
Investigators are checking area surveillance systems the area for possible images of the shooter.
No one is in custody.
