A Tesla electric patrol car by the Fremont Police was forced to back off from a pursuit after the vehicle ran low on battery power in the middle of the chase, reported the police on Sept.25.

The officer in the pursuit voiced his concerns over the radio. “Just down to 6 miles of battery on our Tesla, so I may lose it here in a sec,” he said.

Other units then took over, Fremont police said. The chase was called off due to unsafe driving by the suspect. The vehicle of the suspect was later found abandoned in San Jose.

The Tesla was not fully charged at the beginning of the shift, a Fremont police representative told KPIX 5

This is the second pursuit the Tesla has performed well in, the department said. Fremont Police purchased the used 2014 Model S earlier this year and had it customized for patrol.
