According to police, a mass shooting occurred early Sunday morning, May 30, at a rap performance in the Miami region, killing two people and injuring more than 20 others.
In a suspected planned shooting just after midnight at El Mula Banquet Hall in northwest Miami-Dade County, three attackers rushed out of an SUV and began shooting into the gathering with assault weapons and shotguns, police reported.
“I am at the scene of another targeted and cowardly act of gun violence, where over 20 victims were shot and 2 have sadly died,” Miami-Dade Police Department Director Alfredo “Freddy,” Ramirez III wrote on Twitter.
“These are cold-blooded murderers that shot indiscriminately into a crowd and we will seek justice. My deepest condolences to the family of the victims”, he added.
Investigators have yet to confirm any victims, suspects, or motivations. However, Ramirez stated at a press conference outside the Country Club Shopping Center, where the shooting occurred, that the newest incident was “definitely not random.”
The Miami-Dade Police Department verified to the Miami Herald that no police were on the scene Saturday night.
Eight people were taken to the hospital by paramedics, while at least a dozen others were transported privately to other hospitals in the region.
The incident at the El Mula Banquet Hall, according to Ramirez, occurred shortly after midnight at a concert west of Miami Gardens.
The hall, located within the Country Club Mall, was booked out to host a rap concert as part of a Memorial Day weekend album launch celebration.
CBS-TV in Miami, said a video showed the perpetrators waiting in an SUV for up to 40 minutes before entering at 12:30 a.m., as the crowd left the performance. They fired a shower of at least 100 bullets, including from assault weapons, police reported.
The rapper ABMG Spitta, who was at the center of the album’s release party, was shot in the ankle amid the mass shooting. Police are still investigating for reasons and checking the social network profiles of the rappers to see if they had a grudge or had gotten any threats.
The Miami Herald stated that it was the third shooting in the Miami region since Thursday, May 27, when three people were hurt in a shooting and police chase near the Miami Jai-Alai Casino.
One person was killed, and six others were injured in a drive-by shooting in Miami’s Wynwood area on Friday, May 28.
“This type of gun violence has to stop,” Ramirez appealed for anyone with knowledge about the attack to come forward. He highlighted a Miami businessman’s reward offering on Twitter of $100,000 for anyone with information leading to an arrest.
