According to the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office,Cheyenne Cottrell said that it was Dalton’s first time being in the ocean and he “started to freak out” and struggle after getting swept further into the water by the current.

Cottrell said she tried to help her husband but struggled because he kept pulling her under the water. Dalton then went underwater for more than a minute.

A St. Johns County lifeguard and William David Foy, a nearby paddle boarder, swam out to the couple to try to help. By the time deputies arrived at the scene, a rescuer was performing CPR on Dalton on the beach.

Cottrell was rushed to local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

On July 27, the couple was married—just two days after Dalton’s 22nd birthday.

Dalton Cottrell was pastor student at Faith Baptist Bible College in Ankeny, Iowa, where Cheyenne is student as well, the school said in a statement.
