An 85-year-old Florida man has been charged with killing his wife after police found him standing in the middle of a street with blood on his hands.

Jose Tavera was arrested Monday, Aug. 5, after police found his long time partner Hilda Roman, 90, dead in their home in Kissimmee, Florida, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.

Police received a call around 5:50 a.m. on Monday about a suspicious man standing in the middle of a roadway in Poinciana, Florida, where they spotted the suspect with his hands and shirt covered in blood. When deputies questioned Tavera, he could not recall his address. While Polk County Fire Rescue took Tavera to a local hospital, deputies went to his home Martin Lane in Kissimmee to make sure everything was OK.

They found the garage door partially open. Inside the house, they found Roman’s body in the master bedroom with “obvious trauma on her face, head, arms and wrists,” according to the sheriff’s office, which added that her injuries appeared to stem from a beating.

Detectives interviewed Tavera and observed dried blood under his fingernails on both hands, and he appeared to be shaken and upset.

During the interview, Tavera told detectives he was not under the influence of any medications and healthy. But he said he did not know Hilda Roman.

He was shown photographs of Roman and the house on Martin Lane in Kissimmee. However, he said he had never seen her before and he did not know anything about the house. Tavera then said that detectives were trying to accuse him of something that occurred at that home.

Tavera said “I’m not a murderer,” and then stopped responding to questions.

He was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and booked into the Polk County Jail.

Tavera was then transported to a mental health facility under the Baker Act, deputies said.
