Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Joseph Bullock was fatally shot on Interstate 95 near Stuart on Wednesday morning, Feb. 5. Family and multiple law enforcement agencies are mourning his loss according to CBS 12.

Bullock, a 19-year veteran of the Florida Highway Patrol, was shot at about 11:30 a.m. near mile marker 107 while he was helping a suspect with his/her disabled vehicle.

The suspect was pursued and fatally shot by an off-duty Riviera Beach officer who was in the area and saw the events.

“It’s tragic to lose a brother who protects the citizens of this state. It’s like losing a family member,” FHP Col. Gene Spaulding said.

Authorities have not revealed any information about what led to the shooting.

Bullock, 49, was recently named Trooper of the Month. He is survived by his parents and two sisters.

“The entire Florida Highway Patrol and FLHSMV family mourns today for the loss of one of our own, FHP Trooper Joseph Bullock. Please keep his family and his team members in your prayers,” FLHSMV wrote.
