A Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) trooper was killed Friday morning, Sept. 27, in a crash on State Road 408 in Orlando, officials said.

The FHP tweeted out that Trooper Tracy Vickers, 31, succumbed to his injuries after the accident near the South Conway Road exit.

The FHP Dodge vehicle was traveling eastbound shortly before 6 a.m. when it struck a truck carrying construction equipment parked on the road shoulder.

Vickers is the 48th FHP trooper to die in the line of duty, FHP Col. Gene Spaulding said during a Friday news conference.

Vickers was ending his shift and was on his way home when he crashed, Spaulding said.

Vickers served for four years with the FHP and previously served in the U.S. Navy, according to officials.

“The entire @FLHSMV family mourns today for the loss of one of our own, FHP Trooper Tracy Vickers. Trooper Vickers was a hero and leader within the patrol and his troop. We ask that you keep his family in your prayers,” the FHP tweeted.
