In an investigation called Operation Independence Day, the FBI reported 14 teen victims of sex trafficking were rescued in Las Vegas, with 33 suspected sex traffickers arrested.
According to a statement from the FBI released on Tuesday, Las Vegas has the highest child recovery number in the United States, with 14. Dallas came in second with 13 victims, followed by Detroit with nine victims. Seattle and Atlanta each had six.
In total, the operation, which happened in July, resulted in 103 child victims recovered or identified and 67 alleged sex traffickers nationwide arrested. The sweep resulted in 60 new federal investigations.
The FBI reported that sex traffickers use fraud, force or coercion to get a victim to engage in commercial sex acts.
FBI Public Affairs Officer Rebecca Wu said the effort to help victims takes place daily throughout the year, according to FOX2NOW. The monthlong effort by the FBI and more than 400 law enforcement agencies in 56 cities is a way to highlight a spotlight on sex trafficking.
FBI officials worked with the National Center for Missing an Exploited Children to carry out the initiative.
FBI Director Christopher Wray said in a statement: “The FBI is fiercely focused on recovering child victims and arresting the sex traffickers who exploit them. Through operations like this, the FBI helps child victims escape the abusive life of sex trafficking.”
