Facebook’s vice president, Nick Clegg, admitted that the companies in charge of ‘verifying’ the authenticity of the information published on the social network could have their political bias and apply it to benefit their own agenda when acting, lacking the expected impartiality.
Such statements were made by Clegg to the European Commission, describing the way his giant company sorted disinformation on the site, according to leaked November documents, Daily Mail reported on June 13.
“He [Mr Clegg] also stressed that independent fact-checkers are not necessarily objective because they have their own agenda,” the document reads.
In this regard, former Secretary of State for the Department for Exiting the European Union David Jones described Clegg’s comments as “deeply worrying.”
He added: “The admission completely destroys the credibility of Facebook’s own procedures. It offers news organisations no right of appeal when it censors them, even though it may have acted on the advice of fact-checkers who are motivated by ‘their own agenda’.”
For its part, Facebook reacted to its vice president’s leak by saying, among other things, “Nick never suggested there is bias in our fact-checking programme.”
The fact-checkers hired by Facebook were announced in 2016, and their work has been heavily criticized for having caused ‘disasters’ among users of the huge network who do not follow its leftist narrative. Twitter follows a similar procedure.
In addition to the heavy censorship applied to conservatives, it also censored the possibility that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) or Covid Virus had escaped from a lab, or that it was man-made or fabricated.
For her part, conservative author Candace Owens said that truthers have demonized her account, according to The Daily Wire Nov. 17.
“It’s time to check the fact-checkers,” Owens said in a video posted on Twitter. “I’m going to put these suckers through discovery and figure out what the relationship is that they have with Facebook.”
She added: “Guess what?! I am OFFICIALLY suing the “Fact-Checkers” who are really just activists,” Owens wrote in one of his tweets to which he attached a video of herself.
In fact, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey himself revealed that in just two weeks, between Oct. 27 and Nov. 11, they had deleted nearly 300,000 tweets about the election. In addition to flagging or deleting about 50 publications of President Donald Trump.
Another important issue for citizens that Facebook fiercely censored in October was the one denounced by the New York Post. It presented thousands of documents pointing out the apparent corruption of the then-Democratic presidential candidate, Joe Biden, and his son Hunter.
It should be noted that the apparently independent International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), whose members determine which publications are reliable and which are not, is part of the Poynter Institute for Media Studies created in 2015.
IFCN in recent years got money from Google, the MacArthur Foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Carnegie Foundation, the Open Society Foundations [of George Soros], and the Omidyar Network, among others.
Facebook’s content almost everywhere in the world is handled by verifiers under the strict supervision of the Poynter Institute, and they must go through the screening process and meet the “veracity check” standards, as well as sign the IFCN code of principles, obtain certification and accept the institute’s own reviews.
