Police say a car crashed into a tree and burst into flames on Long Island, killing the driver and critically injuring two teenage passengers.

The crash occurred at around 8:45 a.m. Friday in Mastic Beach, N.Y.

Suffolk County police say 20-year-old William Smith was driving a 1996 Lexus when he lost control of the vehicle, which hit a tree and caught fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A good Samaritan used a garden hose to extinguish some of the flames in order to remove the victims.

Officer David Collins and the resident were able to pull the passengers—16-year-old Rasin Jackson and his 15-year-old brother Zameer Jackson—from the vehicle.

They were airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition.

Officer Collins was transported to the same hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.

The crash is under ongoing investigation.
