Speaking to People magazine, Dolly Parton revealed why she started to make Christian music.

The country music legend was on nominated for Grammys on Wednesday, Nov. 20, for categories such as best contemporary Christian music performance as well as her song for her collaboration with King & Country titled “God Only Knows.” Parton also received a nomination for her song, “Girl in the movies,” from the “Dumplin” soundtrack for best song written for visual media.

“I’ve done so many things,” the 73-year-old singer said. “And I see that I am in a position to help. People look at me like someone they’ve always known, like a mother or sister. If I say something good, people might listen.”

“I’ve just felt like God was calling me into that,” she added. “I’ve always felt like my music was more my ministry than a job. I just feel that this day and time, we need more people that are in a position to help to try to do something, if they can, to brighten the world a little bit. That’s what I’m hoping to do now.”

Two other faith-based song were released by the singer including “There Was Jesus” which she did with Zach Williams and “Faith” in which she collaborated with Galantis and Mr. Probz. The latter, she said, “came to me out of heavens.”

“It’s more of a dance song, as you know. But it’s a very spiritual message. It’s like God saying, ‘Have a little faith in me.’ So I was proud to be part of that whole thing.”

Dolly thanked God for bringing musicians to help her carry out her longings, as she was going to try to do more faith-related things or more uplifting music in the last few months.

Talking more about the relationship between her career and God, Dolly said as she “grew up very spiritually,” it bothered her sometimes when she saw people worshipping the stars and all that. Dolly credited God for giving her everything and “If I do shine and radiate, I’d like to think that is God’s light and I’d like to pass that on. I want to direct people to Him, not me.”

Dolly Parton’s “Heartstrings” became available for streaming on Netflix since Nov. 22.
