A Democrat from New York will treat the previous presidential office the same as groups that engage in serious and unlawful activity.

Empire State Attorney General Letitia James has confirmed her office is now conducting a criminal investigation into the Trump Organization.

“We have informed the Trump Organization that our investigation into the organization is no longer purely civil in nature,” attorney general’s office spokesman Fabien Levy said in a statement obtained by Reuters. “We are now actively investigating the Trump Organization in a criminal capacity, along with the Manhattan district attorney.”

The remarks came about two years after Democratic Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr.’s office first launched a civil investigation into the former president’s business dealings.

Company finances and real estate holdings were two of the many areas examined. Investigators have also targeted several Trump enterprises, including 40 Wall Street in Lower Manhattan, Trump International Hotel and Tower Chicago, Trump National Golf Club in Los Angeles, California–and the Trump Seven Springs Estate in Westchester County, New York.

According to CNN, the former president’s second son, Eric Trump, and Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg have also been grilled about their professional conduct.

Former Trump attorney Michael Cohen previously testified at U.S. Congress that his client allegedly received loans and other tax benefits after dishonestly manipulating the original value of assets.

According to the New York Post, the lawyer has already been at the other end of the justice system after having been sentenced to three years in jail himself for alleged tax evasion and campaign finance violations.

Trump maintained his innocence and described the New York attorney general’s actions as reflections of her own despair and lack of hope.

“There is nothing more corrupt than an investigation that is in desperate search of a crime but, make no mistake, that is exactly what is happening here,” he said in a statement.

The Republican accused James of being politically motivated since she last stood for election, at which point she knew nothing about him allegedly and did not even have a “shred of evidence.”

“The attorney general made each of these statements, not after having had an opportunity to actually look at the facts but before she was even elected,” he said. “If you can run for a prosecutor’s office pledging to take out your enemies, and be elected to that job by partisan voters who wish to enact political retribution, then we are no longer a free constitutional democracy.”

Trump also questioned the credibility of the district attorney’s office investigation because it was based on Cohen’s words, who was a “lying [and] discredited” witness.

“[Cohen] was not listened to or given credibility by other prosecutorial offices,” he said. “[The attorney was] sentenced to three years in prison for lying and other events unrelated to me.”

The former president believes he was mistreated throughout his first term in the Oval Office. His New York political adversaries should have spent more time reducing gunshot injuries, murders, drug dealing, and illegal immigration at the border.

“No president has been treated the way I have [and,] with all of the crime and corruption you read about with others, nothing happens, they only go after Donald Trump,” he said. “If these prosecutors focused on real issues, crime would be obliterated, and New York would be great and free again!”
