According to the Daily Caller, Rep. Elijah Cummings was invited to join the tour of the Baltimore Housing and Urban Development (HUD) facility with HUD secretary Ben Carson on Wednesday. However, Cummings rejected the invitation.
Carson was asked about the absence of Cummings at a press conference and said he didn’t know why Cummings skipped the tour but said it might have been due to a scheduling conflict.
Following remarks by President Donald Trump, Carson’s surprise visit took place amid a nationwide focus on the murder-riddled city.
Carson defended the president’s comments, telling Fox News, “While I was there, I worked on a lot of issues with many politicians, including Elijah Cummings, particularly in terms of childhood education and improving the life for the people … why not spend some time working more for these people, you know, who are suffering?”
Trump targeted Cummings, the chair of the House Oversight Committee, over the weekend, alleging that for years he has ignored his district as it fell into disrepair and filth.
Contrasting the state of the southern border with the portion of Cummings’s district that sits in Baltimore, Trump wrote on Twitter: “As proven last week during a Congressional tour, the Border is clean, efficient & well run, just very crowded. Cumming District is a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess. If he spent more time in Baltimore, maybe he could help clean up this very dangerous & filthy place.”
Trump also wondered why so much money was being sent to the district when it was run so badly. “Where is all this money going? How much is stolen? Investigate this corrupt mess immediately!” he wrote.
Ignoring that the word “racist” will of course be thrown around for the offense of implying that public officials should be held accountable and hold others accountable in spending taxpayer money, President Trump answered the question about what Rep. Cummings and the entire Oversight Committee should do, recommending they study Baltimore and other Democratic-run cities to find the billions and billions of stolen public money.
