A Texan couple was stunned to discover their Chihuahua had secretly joined them for a vacation on Sept. 26.
Jared Owens and his wife Kristi realized their suitcase was too heavy to pass through the baggage handling system at Lubbock Airport.
“They put it on the scale and this bag is basically like five, 5.5 pounds overweight,” he said according to the New York Post.
Owens tried to remove some of the heavier objects and quickly realized the family dog was inside. The pooch seemingly thought it was a good idea to join the couple for their Southwest Airlines flight to Las Vegas.
“She is the burrower, that is what she does,” Owens said according to the paper. “She burrows in clothes, she burrows in, obviously suitcases now.”
Fortunately, Southwest employee Cathy Cook offered to look after the dog while the couple moved to the departure gates.
“They have got a heck of an employee in Cathy,” Owens said. “She went above and beyond and never … turned us in saying we were trying to smuggle a dog to Vegas or something.”
“Thank goodness we found this dog because you would have gotten to Vegas and you probably would have had a deceased animal in your bag,” he added.
They flew two weeks before Southwest Airlines canceled more than 1,800 flights due to extreme weather. These cancelations stranded hundreds of passengers at airports across the nation according to the Daily Mail.
