Rep. John Curtis (R-Utah) told Breitbart News that Democratic lawmakers in the House did not vote on a bill that would punish Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leaders who silenced Chinese doctors who tried to warn of the CCP virus threat.
“We need to be bipartisan as we deal with China [the CCP],” Curtis told host and Breitbart News Washington political editor Matthew Boyle. “The Democrats have chosen not to join us … we’ve got this China task force, and they won’t join us on that, and it’s one of the most important issues facing the country right now.”
The bill that Curtis is pushing in the House, known as the Li Wenliang Global Public Health Accountability Act authorizes sanctions regarding the deliberate concealment or distortion of information about public health emergencies of international concern.
This is based on the case of eye doctor Li Wenliang, who since December last year has been trying to warn his medical colleagues about a virus that resembles SARS. Curtis said the specialist was forced by local police to sign a statement saying he was wrong.
According to Curtis’s website, “Wuhan’s Public Security Bureau detained, questioned, and forced Dr. Li Wenliang to sign a letter confessing he made ‘false comments’ that ‘severely disturbed the social order.”
“There was a study published in March, which indicated that if Chinese authorities had acted just three weeks earlier, which they would have had the information to do, the number of cases could have been reduced by 95 percent around the globe,” Curtis said.
Curtis’s bill also aims to sanction any regime that suppresses information about a pandemic in the future.
The China task force with the bill’s sponsor was reviewing the bill, Curtis said, and results are expected next week.
“I think the American people will be both impressed and a little bit worried about what’s ahead of us. Let’s remember that it’s not the Chinese people we have a problem with. It’s the Chinese leadership. We have a great relationship with the Chinese people, and I personally enjoy the Chinese culture,” Curtis said.
Last May Reps. Jim Banks (R-Ind.), a member of the Chinese House Task Force, Lance Gooden (R-Texas) and Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) sent a letter to the State Department asking for sanctions against several Chinese officials for their efforts to hide information about the CCP Virus.
Similarly, the letter aimed at sanctioning 10 officials of the Chinese Communist Party and also asked to punish those who were involved in the imprisonment of those who tried to provide information to the world.
According to The Washington Free Beacon, the push for sanctions was backed by the Magnitsky Act, which allows the U.S. government to punish human rights abusers worldwide.
Regarding the current proposal to sanction Chinese officials involved in the CCP Virus coverup, Curtis said, “The Chinese Communist government has clearly taken a bad turn on human rights.”
“Look what’s happening in Hong Kong and freedom and suppressing everything that we value here in the United States. America, this is our window, our time to correct that relationship. … The longer we let it go astray, the harder it’s going to be to correct that,” Curtis added, according to Breitbart News.
