Jay-Z and his wife, Beyoncé, sit down during the Super Bowl national anthem in Miami on Sunday, Feb. 1, despite the rapper defending his controversial partnership with the NFL over with Colin Kaepernick kneeling saga.

As Demi Lovato took to the field to sing the national anthem ahead of kick-off between San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs, instead of standing, Jay-Z, Beyoncé and their daughter Blue Ivy could be seen in their chairs while others around were on their feet.

Neither Beyoncé or Jay-Z has addressed their decision to remain seated during the song.

Jay-Z received backlash since he had become one of the biggest supporters of former 49ers Kaepernick, who sat during the national anthem at the NFL games and then began to kneel during them in 2016 to protest the killings of blacks by police officers.

Jay-Z’s response at that time was that he still supports protesting, kneeling, and Kaepernick, but he’s also interested in working with the league to make substantial changes.

Defending himself against accusations he was betraying Kaepernick’s Black Lives Matter ‘take a knee’ protest by partnering with the NFL, Jay-Z commented last August, “I think we’re past kneeling.”

After the Sunday game, Kaepernick shared a post from Miko Grimes, the wife of NFL star Brent Grimes on his own Instagram Story, in which Grimes posted a screenshot of TMZ’s coverage of the couple’s decision to sit for “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Grimes captioned the image: “I thought we were ‘past kneeling’ [though]?” She ended her post with a thinking face emoji.

Kaepernick’s girlfriend, Nessa Diab, also posted the image to her page.

Jay-Z spoke to The New York Times in an interview published on Feb. 1 and admitted that he wholly stands behind Kaepernick.

“No one is saying he hasn’t been done wrong,” Jay-Z explained. “He was done wrong. I would understand if it was three months ago. But it was three years ago and someone needs to say, ‘What do we do now—because people are still dying?’”

He also said he could live with the criticism as long as he can make a substantial change. So maybe he won’t put too much stock into this post from Kaep.
