Senator Susan Collins (R-Maine) joined a group of Texas Republicans headed by Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) and John Cornyn (R-Tex.) on an overnight trip to the U.S.–Mexico fence. The tour continues today through Mission, Texas, but they’ve already experienced the turmoil firsthand.

“1 A.M.—I spent the last 3 hours with Border Patrol on night shift in McAllen, TX. 18 Senators learning about the huge influx, 3,000 people per day, including unaccompanied children, illegally entering,” Sen. Susan Collins tweeted.

She continued that Mexican cartels have complete control over who enters and exits the country. A young Guatemalan woman, sitting on an aluminum blanket with her one-year-old, told her she paid $6,000 to traffickers.

Collins added that new policies had left Border Patrol overburdened, overworked, and dissatisfied.

Agents took us through a dangerous path to the Rio Grande where we could hear the Cartel members taunting us across the river,” she said. Human trafficking, child exploitation, and drug smuggling are all commonplace. This is a situation that requires immediate attention.

Cartels make around $18 million a day at $6000 per individual with 3000 crossings in 24 hours.

Julio Rosas of Townhall has been reporting from the frontier for weeks, seeing human traffickers transport illegals across the Rio Grande in rafts.

According to polling from the Senate Opportunity Fund, most voters also said they want the government to finish constructing former President Trump’s border wall amid a growing crisis at the U.S.–Mexico border.

The Washington Times noted that support for Trump’s border wall has shifted since he left office, calling it a “striking change” among people who used to be skeptical of Trump’s immigration policies.

“When Mr. Trump proposed a wall during the 2016 campaign, it cleaved the country, with supporters and opponents about evenly divided. While Mr. Trump was carrying out those plans as president, support slipped, with 55% opposed, according to a 2019 survey from the Chicago Council on Global Affairs,” the Times reported. “The Senate Opportunity Fund’s polling now shows 38% opposed and 53% in support of the wall.”

The report highlighted a significant change among voters from the left opposing the wall. The Chicago Council poll found 85% of Democrats opposed the wall but now the Senate Opportunity Fund showing only 63% of liberals opposed it.

In the survey, 59% of voters blame President Biden for the surge of migrants at the border, while 28% exonerated him and 12% were unsure. Seventy-one percent of voters said they want the Biden administration to issue stricter policies to quell the crisis.

The survey was taken from March 16 to March 18 with 802 registered voters nationally.

Since taking office, Biden has rolled back a slew of Trump’s immigration policies. He suspended the border wall construction, moved to provide 11 million illegal aliens with a path to citizenship, and preserved Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. He also stopped deportation for 100 days and paused Trump’s Remain in Mexico program, which forced illegals to stay in Mexico until their court hearings.

According to The Associated Press, Biden’s order to “pause” construction of the border wall left billions of dollars worth of work unfinished after Trump worked feverishly last year to build more than 450 miles.

The Customs and Border Protection facilities have been operating far beyond capacity amid the crisis. The agency said that it apprehended more than 100,000 illegal aliens at the border in February, while the number of unaccompanied children in custody has also increased dramatically.
