U.S. politicians from both sides of the aisle call for Gov. Andrew Cuomo to be investigated or be impeached on Thursday, Feb. 11, in response to new revelations about his stonewalling the release of information about nursing home deaths.
According to New York Post, Cuomo’s top aide Melissa DeRosa told the state’s top Democrats that the Cuomo administration had withheld data on CCP Virus (coronavirus) deaths at nursing homes to avoid federal scrutiny following a federal investigation into the issue in several states.
In a leaked conference call with Democratic lawmakers, DeRosa said that the administration feared the data could “be used against us” by the Justice Department.
“Governor Cuomo, the secretary to the governor, and his senior team must be prosecuted immediately—both by the attorney general of New York state—and the U.S. Department of Justice,” Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) said in a statement. “This bombshell admission of a cover-up and the remarks by the secretary to the governor indicating intent to obstruct any federal investigation is a stunning and criminal abuse of power.”
“I have said from the beginning that this is more than a nursing home scandal. This is a massive corruption and coverup scandal at the highest level of New York State Government implicating the Governor, the Secretary to the Governor, the New York State Health Commissioner and the Governor’s staff,” she added.
New York State Senate Minority Leader Rob Ortt demanded a “top to bottom” investigation into Cuomo and New York State and that his emergency powers be stripped.
“Instead of apologizing or providing answers to the thousands of New York families who lost loved ones, the governor’s administration made apologies to politicians behind closed doors for the ‘political inconvenience’ this scandal has caused them,” Ortt said.
“For over six months, day after day, in briefing after briefing, Governor Cuomo stood before New Yorkers and lied about his directive that contributed to the deaths of thousands of seniors,” said Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro, Cuomo’s 2018 challenger, reported Politico.
“In the coming days, he will cynically try to convince us that it was for our own good—that it was someone else’s fault. This is another lie. What is true is Andrew Cuomo has proved himself unworthy of our trust, and unfit for public office,” he added.
Some Democrats also voiced their frustration following the report, “You’re only sorry that you all got caught,” tweeted state Sen. Alessandra Biaggi (D-Westchester). “Because of your decisions, thousands of people died who did not have to die.”
A March directive from Cuomo ordering nursing homes to admit patients who tested positive for the CCP Virus has drawn criticism. Cuomo has blamed former President Trump for CCP Virus-related deaths in the state, calling Trump a liar and “super-spreader.”
Cuomo released a book titled “American Crisis” in October 2020, praising his handling of the pandemic amid growing virus cases in the State.
According to the Post, more than 13,000 nursing home residents were killed by the CCP Virus. Overall, New York has lost almost 45,000 people to the virus, more than every other state except California.
