A car crash took place on 241 Toll Road in Orange County, California, caused the death of a 7-year-old and three of his family members were injured.
Orange County Fire Authority said at around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 25, a vehicle struck the Fontana family’s stalled car near Windy Ridge Road, south of the 91 Freeway.
Seven-year-old Ver’Shad Raggins was airlifted to Children’s Hospital of Orange County where he was later pronounced dead.
Ver’Shad’s father, Vernon Sr., 54, and his two other brothers were taken by ambulance to a local hospital. The surviving 7-year-old and the father had major injuries, while the 16-year-old brother suffered minor injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The driver of the van went to the hospital with minor injuries.
Authorities said the family was on the way to the beach when their Kia Optima stalled. The father said as he turned the hazard lights on and waved his hands out the window to call for help, he noticed a white cargo van approaching their car with a “never appeared to slow down” speed.
The twins were sitting in the back seat and the teenage was sitting in the front passenger seat. Vernon Sr. yelled to the children, “hold on boys hold on,” the family said, as the van plowed into them.
A GoFundMe was created to help the family with the funeral costs.
“A mom shouldn’t have to bury her baby, a father shouldn’t have to plead with God to switch places with his deceased son,” the family wrote on a GoFundMe. “This has taken a huge toll on the family to know how one twin will always be without his best friend and his partner in crime.”
Anyone with information about the crash was asked to call the California Highway Patrol at 714-567-6000.
