Democratic California reported that it will spend $28 million to help President Joe Biden in his effort to keep illegal aliens in the United States who are awaiting a judicial hearing.
Under the administration of former President Trump, illegal aliens who were apprehended, following the Remain in Mexico policy, had to wait in Mexico for a hearing with a judge to decide whether or not they would be granted a residency permit. After a series of changes in immigration legislation during the first days of Joe Biden’s presidency, this waiting period was authorized to take place in the United States.
California committed to contribute $28 million to cover the costs of housing, food, health, transportation, and other expenses for those immigrants who are waiting for a judicial resolution of their asylum applications.
“We have been in discussions with the Biden administration through the Department of Homeland Security about this change in policy on our side of the border and what we are willing to do to help that be as seamless a process as possible,” said H.D. Palmer, deputy director for external affairs at the California Department of Finance, according to Breitbart.
According to California officials, approximately $20 million of the committed funds will go to the California Department of General Services to pay for hotel rooms to quarantine and isolate migrants for seven to 10 days amid the CCP pandemic crisis.
The funding signals the California’s acceptance of and cooperation with the federal government on controversial new immigration policies.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is expected to process about 25 asylum-seekers through the San Diego border per day. Although that number could eventually increase to 300 asylum-seekers per day.
“As President Biden has made clear, the U.S. government is committed to rebuilding a safe, orderly, and humane immigration system,” said DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in a statement in February announcing the department’s new policy.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom refused to cooperate with the Trump administration on issues tied to the effort made to combat illegal immigration, passing a series of “sanctuary state” laws that were largely upheld in federal court.
The immigration policies of President Biden and his state collaborators have been criticized from different sectors. They mainly condemn the relaxation of the borders and the entry facilities for illegal aliens seeking to enter from the southern border of the United States.
Recently, a former immigration adviser who worked in President Trump’s Cabinet, Stephen Miller, warned that Joe Biden’s administration proposes an immigration agenda that “would fundamentally erase the very essence of the American nation.”
“The legislation put forward by President Biden and congressional Democrats would fundamentally erase the very essence of American nationhood,” said Miller in an interview with Fox News in late February. He added, “For the first time, I believe in human history, this legislation proposes to send applications to previously deported illegal immigrants and give them the opportunity to re-enter the country on a fast track to citizenship. This is unprecedented.”
