The UK ambassador to Washington, whose criticism of President Donald Trump was recently made public has resigned.

According to the British Foreign Office on Wednesday, July 10, Kim Darroch resigned after internal documents were released describing the Trump administration as “diplomatically clumsy and inept,” adding that he doubted it would become “substantially more normal,” according to Fox News.

The diplomat published a letter of resignation today where he explains, “The current situation is making it impossible for me to carry out my role as I would like,” according to Fox News.

“Although my posting is not due to end until the end of this year, I believe in the current circumstances the responsible course is to allow the appointment of a new ambassador,” Darroch wrote.

On Tuesday, the British government said he continues to have the prime minister’s full support, while stressing that the statements in the leaked documents had been taken out of context and in no way reflected “the closeness of, and the esteem in which we hold, the relationship [with the United States].”

President Trump said on Twitter, “I don’t know the ambassador, but he’s not appreciated in the United States.”

“The good news for the wonderful United Kingdom is that they will soon have a new Prime Minister,” said the president, who wanted to highlight how much he enjoyed his State Visit to the United Kingdom last month.
