A brazen robber was trying to steal a woman’s purse in West Palm Beach, Florida, but her 9-year-old daughter intervened to protect her.
A surveillance video shared by FOX 35 Orlando showed that the woman left a supermarket, and the crook followed. When she prepared to load goods into her car, the suspect rushed to snatch something from her, knocking her down.
The little girl then appeared and ran towards the suspect and punched him on his face and head.
Fox News citing West Palm Beach police, said that the girl, identified as Journee Nelson, went shopping for groceries with her mother at Sabor Tropical Supermarket on Nov. 2 when the robber tried to steal her mother’s purse.
Telling her story on several news outlets, Journee said she fought off the robber to protect her mother.
“We walked out the store and then I took a little glance at him and then I looked back at the car and then I opened my door. And then, next thing I know, I saw him running towards my mom,” she told “Fox & Friends Weekend” on Sunday, Nov. 21.
“I fought back. I had to save my mom,” she told WSVN.
The mother, Danielle Mobley, described that she struggled to hold onto the purse when the robber pushed her down to the ground.
“That is when I let it go and figured he would take off …” Mobley said.
After Journee jumped into action, the robber also pushed the little girl down and ended up taking off with the purse. He was later identified as Demetrius Jackson and arrested two days later, police said.
Jackson was charged with robbery and battery.
On Thursday, West Palm Beach Police Chief Frank Adderley gave Journee a medal and a certificate applauding her quick actions and courage.
“I wouldn’t recommend that you confront an individual like that but in the heat of the moment things happen. I bet he was shocked when she kicked him right in the face because he definitely could tell on the video that he was not expecting that, and her actions were perfect timing in this particular situation, and I think she hit him pretty hard,” Adderley said.
